Technology Tuesdays: Every Tuesday in January

For most lawyers, the majority of communications with clients and other lawyers occur via email. As a result, lawyers and staff are generally overloaded with email and many feel helpless when trying to get it under control. Unfortunately, Microsoft Outlook’s default settings don’t make it easy to see many emails at once, nor manage them. In this seminar, we’ll show you how to significantly improve Outlook’s default settings, tweak its interface, see more email at once, track and flag emails for follow-up, and store emails (and attachments) efficiently so others in your office can find them when appropriate.

Documenting processes will often take a backseat to billable work and pending deadlines. “We don’t have time to create them.” We also often hear things like “My practice is too complex to reduce things to a simple process or checklist. There are too many variables!” The truth is the opposite. Very few things will free up more of your time than investing in documenting your processes. In this session, we will roll up our sleeves and learn how to create process documentation, maps, checklists and videos, and where to save them.

As everyone knows, most legal instruments have numbered paragraphs. Unfortunately, setting up a single or multi-level numbering scheme in Word is neither intuitive nor easy. It is one of the most complained-about features in Word for good reason. In this seminar, we’ll show you how to set up automatic paragraph numbers (single or multi-level), attach them to styles if you choose to do that, and create cross-references that will also automatically update if the document is edited. Finally, we’ll cover techniques for fixing paragraph numbering in existing documents where it has gone sideways.
